My Sister

Throughout my life, my sister Rachelle has always been there for me. Not in the obligatory sense either, but out of genuine love! She carried me around the house like her own personal baby doll, helped me get my first cell phone (when my parents thought it was unnecessary), and even let me live with her for a year when I moved to Orange County. These examples are nothing compared to the impression she has had on my life! Always a shining ray of support and encouragement, not matter my endeavor, she is my biggest fan!

Photography seems to run in the family, and has always been a passion Rachelle and I shared – to see Rachelle’s beautiful nature photography go to www.RachelleHobbsPhotography.com! Since I had portraits taken for my website, I realized their importance and insisted that my sister put a portrait of herself on her new website. So a photo shoot was born!

To be honest, I was a little nervous to photograph Rachelle. I knew the expectations weren’t monumental, but I wanted to show her accurately through my eyes. The beautiful, talented, warm, wonderful person, who can achieve success in anything she wants! As our shoot approached, a calm wave of certainty came over me, and a part of me knew everything would turn out exactly how it should! We chose Yorba Linda Regional Park because of this beautiful lakes, and overgrown foliage, the perfect environment for a nature photographer! We were incredibly blessed with amazing light, and I am thrilled with the results of our session!

Rachelle, I couldn’t ask for a better big sister! Thank you for all our daily phone calls, for teaching me to follow my dreams, reminding me to be true to myself, and for just being you! I wouldn’t be where I am without you!!

Digital Negatives?

Lately, I’ve had a few people ask how much I photoshop my photographs. So in the interest of full discloser, I figured it was time to show and explain exactly what I do. First and foremost, Photoshop is AMAZING and could probably be considered my closet friend (if we count hours spent together). But like all good things, moderation is the key. I am a strong believer in using the tools at hand to create the best possible photograph. With that said, I am not a fan of drastically changing the way a person looks.

Since the switch to digital, many photographers are offering “digital negatives” with wedding packages, but there is still a lot of misconceptions about what this actually means. Below is an example of the three editing stages my photographs go through to achieve their final look.

ORIGINAL: This is the untouched photograph, straight from the camera. Usually looks pretty good, but its potential is endless!

DIGITAL NEGATIVE (also known as a proof): This is the photograph you will see, and the first stage of edits. No drastic changes are made at this point; usually color, saturation, brightness and hues is all thats needed.

RETOUCHING: The final stage is where your photographs really come alive! Generally speaking, this can mean the changing of: color hues, contrast, removing pimples, stray hairs or under eye darkness, opening closed eyes, erasing any distracting objects in the background (like other people), adding that “pop,” converting to black and white and other special effects. Each photograph will require something different, so special attention is taken to ensure your photograph looks the best it possibly can!

This is a very brief explanation to a process that has limitless options. I hope this helps show the difference and importance of each step, and how every photograph receives individual attention and photoshop lovin’! If you have any more questions about my editing process, digital negative, or anything else, please e-mail me and I’ll be happy to help!

Keri Welch - Great post, Kaysha. As a photographer, I love to see the process that others go through. As a client, it’s important to remember how much is involved in the process.

Rachelle - Your use of Photoshop is subtle but always enhances your images beautifully! Keep up the great work!!

Clayton Austin - I agree with Keri. It is very important to keep in mind how much work goes into a final image however I have this huge phobia of clients seeing untouched images. Similar to an artist revealing an unfinished painting or sculpture. I would be lost without PS for sure!

Kaysha - Wow! Clayton, I’m a HUGE fan of your work, thanks for the comment! I can understand why you wouldn’t want to show clients untouched images, your final images are stunning (no before needed)!!

Rachelle - I love your tag line “Capturing the moments that matter most”.

Miss Jackie

Jackie was honest with me from the start. She confessed that she was “not one of those photogenic people,” and in response, I smiled and laughed! I laughed because I knew exactly how she felt, and in the back of my mind a challenge was born. I instantly set out on a mission: to prove Jackie wrong!

Throughout our session, we explored the back streets of Santa Ana, the only audible sound was our giggles as we snapped countless frames. I would show Jackie the back of my camera and she would respond surprised “Ah, I like that!?” I knew from the moment I met Jackie she would be a dream to photograph, and boy were my expectations exceeded!

After making my first round of edits, I still had over 150 frames of pure goodness! To say that choosing the blog photographs was difficult, would be a gross understatement… it was nearly impossible (a problem I don’t mind at all)! I’m not usually one to brag, but Jackie my dear, I hate to break it to you… you are one of those photogenic people!;)

The ultimate package, Jackie is not only beautiful, smart, and funny, she is an AMAZING writer!! I am absolutely addicted to her blog, and strongly recommend everyone to check it out! She has a profound ability to get to the root of life in a honest way that everyone can relate to!

The next few shots need some explanation. Although Jackie and I were having an awesome time photographing, I cannot take credit for the above smiles. From across the way, loud cat calls soon became the only thing either of us could hear: “Ya, work it girl! Are you a model? Your so pretty, what’s your name?” Soon the admirers made their way to a center stage view of Jackie, and the adoration continued to pour like rain from the heavens. We laughed, trying to hold some composure, snapping a few last frames. Just like any good model, Jackie posed with her drooling 16-year-old fans. We called it a night, and everyone went their separate ways, all with HUGE smiles of their faces!

Rochelle - Wow, what an amazing shoot, this is exactly the situation where you need a blog to tell/show everything else that went on behind the scenes. Beautiful as always!

Trailer

Since this is my first “official” post on my new blog, I thought I’d do something a little different…

I’ve always loved trailers. It’s my favorite part of going to the movies (not counting the candy and popcorn of course), and the previews always give me something to look forward to. So just for fun, I made a short KWP (Kaysha Weiner Photographer) promotional trailer/slideshow. Check it out, pass it along, and let me know what you think!:)
