My Bucket List

So thanks to Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, we all know what a Bucket List is (a list of things to do before you, well… kick the bucket). Although, I do have several variations of this list, I decided to start a new one… my photography bucket list! My thoughts behind it are simple, not only to one day accomplish, but to put something in motion. Like small ripples in a still pond, eventually they’ll have to reach the edge right?

What I’m dying to photograph:

  • Destination wedding (outside of U.S.)
  • Same sex commitment/ marriage ceremony
  • Elopement
  • A birth and NEW newborn session (minutes old)
  • Indian wedding
  • Bride in a colored wedding gown (off-white doesn’t count)
  • Portrait session in an orchard (corn field would work too)
  • Engagement shoot with horses
  • New York City engagement shoot
  • An outdoor winter wedding (with snow on the ground)
  • Military family reunion
  • An olympic game
  • Wedding in a castle
  • 50+ wedding anniversary

My list could literally go on for pages, which makes me strangely excited. There is just so much to see, learn and explore, and I can’t wait to start crossing things off this list!

It’s all in the mix

I’m convinced that the key to archiving anything in life requires dedication, a sense of humor, comfortable shoes and a good playlist (not in that particular order;)).

I’ve been struggling to get back into my running routine, and after a few weeks off, I need more motivation then usual. Mostly because I know how much that first run is gonna hurt, how quickly fatigue will set in, and how much I’m gonna want to give up! So I turn to my playlist, with hopes that fast paced rhythms and loud lyrics will be enough to drown out the doubt in my head and push through the pain!

Any suggestions to what I should add to this mix? I need all the help I can get!:)

Star gazing

One of my fondest memories growing up was walks with my father. We would start right after sunset, just the two of us, when the sky was calm and milky with color. Walking down the empty road the cool air and faint sound of rebidding frogs was our only company. We’d pick a spot far enough away from our neighbors lights and open enough to see the unblocked sky. Then we would wait, eye’s glued to the heavens. One by one, they would appear, and we would count… one… two… three… At first, it would take a few minutes, steadily increasing, until suddenly you saw it!

Not one star, or a few, but the entire night sky filled with thousands of glimmering stars. Losing count we’d marvel at what lay above us, nothing and everything all rolled into one! No matter how many times we’d do this, it always seemed to happen so quickly. As if all of a sudden every little light turned on at once, it was magical!

Our daily life can be a lot like star gazing, you become so busy with the counting that you miss the beauty of the entire night sky.

Take a moment and let yourself marvel at something! Happy Monday!

Behind the Shot: Off-camera lighting

It’s something relatively simple, but it’s results can be spectacular! Combined with the right location and time of day, you can take a photograph:

I don’t know about you, but I certainly prefer the photograph to the right! Taken only 2 minutes apart, this kind of shot is only achieved with off-camera lighting. You might remember Rochelle’s portrait shoot from last week, and I thought it would be fun to show the difference a little can have! With only my 550EX Speedlite, a tripod and ghetto wireless trigger; I have everything I need to recreate this photo. I went for a dramatic look with the sky underexposed to make it appear as though the sun had already set. I don’t always get the extra time to add in another light (in addition to the sun) but after this shoot, I feel inspired to add it to the mix more often!

Full behind the scenes lighting set up and you can see what an impact one light can have!

I usually prefer to shoot in all natural light (why mess with something already so beautiful) but with more experience, I’m loving the dramatic and striking images that off-camera lighting can produce. What do you think, all natural, or a little added light?

New Sample Album

As soon as I finished this boudoir shoot, I knew it would make an awesome little album, and now that it’s complete, I can finally show it off! I just LOVE making albums, its like the final cherry on top of your photographic sundae (yes, I just compared photography to ice cream;))! Too often digital photos end up living on our computers; so whenever I have a chance to make an album, canvas print, or anything I can physically hold in my hands, I’m all over it!

Here are a few shots…

This linen cover has a beautiful shine and feel to it!

Lay flat pages.

This paper has a beautiful pebble like texture, I’m lovin’ the fineart look.

Happy Monday everyone and contact me to take home your very own album!
